erwarteten die Zuschauer einen kampferischen Tachiai, mit dem Stoyanov
in früheren Kämpfen geglänzt hatte, aber es wurde ein
negativer Höhepunkt, als Byamba mit einem Henka und Hatakikomi
gewann. Hans Borg, der ein Favorit war, gewann Bronze. Durch seine
Erfahrung im Wrestling spielt er immer gerne mit dem Publikum, das –
angetrieben von der Atmosphäre und exzellentem Bier und Sake –
mehr als gerne darauf antwortete.
Die Menge war wirklich angeheizt bei der offenen Klasse der Herren, bei
der der David-gegen-Goliath-Apsekt mitspielte. Es gab einige
Überraschungssiege, die es wert waren, das Zabuton zu werfen, wenn
man nur (natürlich) eines gehabt hätte! Der 80 Kilogramm
leichte Trent Sabo (USA) vom Oceanside Sumo Kyokai
(http://www.oceanside sumo.com) lieferte einen von diesen, als er hinter
einen Gegner sprang und mit Okuridashi gewann.
Später aber lief er
in einen mächtigen Schlag von Stoyanov hinein, für den es
keinen Kimarite gibt, der nur annährend die Geschwindigkeit
beschreiben kann, mit der Sabo den Dohyo verließ – und die Zeit,
die er während des Verlassens in der Luft verbrachte! Am Ende
wurde es ein Rückkampf des Schwergewichts-finales zwischen Byamba
und Stoyanov. Byamba sollte erneut triumphieren, dieses Mal ohne die
Hilfe eines Henka. Bayanbat Davaadalai holte Bronze in der offenen
Klasse.

Bei den Damen traten nur fünf Frauen an, und Michelle Pike (USA,
Leichtgewicht) und Florence Bannout (USA, Mittelgewicht) gewannen ihre
Klassen ohne Gegner. Bei den Schwergewichten sah man einige hitzige
Kämpfe, besondern zwischen Dashdalum Sambuu (MON) und Lindsay Hood
(USA). Am Ende war Sambuu stärker und gewann das Schwergewicht und
die offene Klasse. Lindsay Hodd gewann Silber im Schwergewicht und
Bronze in der offenen Klasse, wo Florence Bannout sie
überrumpelte, um Silber zu gewinnen. Elizabeth Grey holte Bronze
im Schwergewicht der Damen.
