highest rate so far in the study, and boosted the overall win rate to 70% (129 wins in 185 henka bouts).  With only 11 basho studied so far, if someone is targeted for henka more than once in a basho, it can send him up aways in the ranking of henka targets, and that happened with Dejima this time.  He was actually 11th after the Hatsu basho but since he was the only rikishi targeted more than once (twice) in Haru, he jumped up to 4th place on the list.  I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering why he wasn’t higher than 11th before, but it’ll take 25 or 30 basho for things to fall into place (you know – the old “they are who we thought they were” logic).
There are two strange statistics regarding Tosanoumi.

The first is that he’s only 10th on the list, and the real doozie is that he’s only lost one of the six bouts he was targeted in.  Except for Dejima at 63%,  everyone else on the top ten list has a loss percentage of over 70%, with Roho’s perfect 100% (i.e., lost every bout he was targeted in: 7 for 7) still intact, as he was not targeted in Haru.  As with the list of henka perpetrators, the data for the targets are based only on those matches voted as actual henka.  Here is the overall top ten list of henka targets, ranked in order of the percentage of their total bouts

in which they were a henka target:

Hokutoriki
Miyabiyama
Kasugao
Dejima
Roho
Iwakiyama
Kotooshu
Kokkai

There isn’t a lot more to report this time, since this is not a detailed account.  There’ll be one of those in June.  Enjoy the spring!
