Kokkai wins over Tosanoumi by uwatenage on Day 3. This was his first win of the basho, one of only five. Kokkai's ascended quickly to his current loft rank of Maegashira 2 relying largely on his impressive strength. Former yokozuna Kitanofuji sharply criticized Kokkai's sloppy sumo during his television commentary, calling it streetfighting. After this 5-10 makekoshi, it is clear that Kokkai will have to clean up his technique before he approaches sanyaku.
