Futeno loses to Jumonji by Yorikiri. Day 3 was his first loss of the basho. He went on to win all but two other bouts and win his first Sansho award: the Kanto-sho. Futeno was told on Day 14 that if he beat Shimotori on Day 15 for 12 wins he would be awarded the Kanto-sho. Despite this added pressure, Futeno defeated Shimotori by Yorikiri clinching the award. His 12-3 record will bring him up the banzuke from his current rank of Maegashira 10. It remains to be seen if he can hold his own against upper maegashira.
