Minaminoshima (West Sandanme 60) means tropical island, and sounds like an appropriate shikona for a Tongan. It is also this rikishi’s real name. Minaminoshima’s father was a rikishi from Asashiyama Beya, and named his son after his own shikona of Minaminoshima. After steadily showing strong sumo (including a Sandanme yusho in March 2004) he suffered a knee injury and plummeted down the banzuke. He was scheduled to undergo knee surgery after Natsu -- perhaps, in anticipation of this fact, he secured a solid 5-2 kachikoshi.
