Following their investigations into the recent match-fixing scandal, the Kyokai "advised" a number of active and
former rikishi to file their retirement papers. In the event only Sokokurai, Hoshikaze and Tanigawa Oyakata
(former rikishi Kaiho) refused to comply, saying that they were innocent of the charges, and were summarily fired.
Early evidence that the Kyokai might find some of the dismissals blowing up in their faces has already been
furnished by Sokokurai going to court to claim his salary and continuance of his status as a rikishi.
