The Japan Sumo Association has lurched from crisis to crisis in recent times. Hot on the heels of a
scandal involving illegal betting which culminated in the dismissal of Ozeki Kotomitsuki, mobile
phones confiscated by police in that investigation have incriminated a number of sekitori in
systematic match fixing. So far only Kasuganishiki and Chiyohakuho have admitted their guilt.
This latest scandal may not bring down the house of cards around the ears
of the Sumo authorities, but it will surely shake the foundations.
