While the "headline" Europeans in makuuchi division (the two ozeki Kotooshu and Baruto) were doing only
moderately well in the recent Natsu Basho, two more junior Europeans were producing eye-catching performances.
Russian Aran finished with a dazzling score of 12-3, his best result in makuuchi division, with only a small
number of wins coming from his usual slap-downs and evasive sumo. Meanwhile Tochinoshin scored a more
moderate 8-7, but four of his wins were against ozeki.
Each deservedly received a fighting spirit prize worth ¥2 million.
