Ichihara joined professional sumo in January 2007 at makushita 10 tsukedashi,
the highest possible entry rank, having won championships in two qualifying
amateur sumo tournaments while at Nichidai University. He made his juryo
debut in November, by which time his hair had not grown sufficiently to be tied
in an oicho-mage (top-knot), the badge of privilege of a sekitori.
