The release date for the film version of the best-selling novel, “Memoirs of a Geisha” in the US is December 16. Trailers will be released in late October with sumo playing a small part in the film as many amateur rikishi make their film debuts. Bumbo Kalima (ex-Wakachikara) took part in the 4-day “Black Ships Festival” in Newport, RI along with Ace Yonamine. The two big guys and Hawaiian Sumo Organization’s John Jacques gave 3 exhibitions to captive audiences each of the 4 days beneath the blazing hot July sun. About a dozen children also took part and tried their best to

push the burly Hawaiians out of the dohyō. Great fun for everyone!


Movie star Jerry O'Connell and Tony Danza got Memorial Day in America off to a fighting start when they donned sumo suits and challenged each other to a battle of the bulge. Kangaroo Jack star O'Connell confessed to the “Taxi” star-turned-US chat show host that he had an unfair advantage as he had experience of battling in a fat suit. He explained, “I did it in a bar with my brother, I was really drunk.” O'Connell duly won the battle when he knocked the chat show host over three times and the fight was stopped when the two stars were giggling so much, they couldn't go on.
